On 26 January 2016, the Delegation of the European Union organized a working lunch with the President of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), Kanayo F. Nwanze and EU Member States in Rome. The lunch was an opportunity to discuss the collaboration between IFAD and the EU, at political and operational level.

On 27 January Hilda C Heine was elected as the eighth President of the Republic of the Marshall Islands by the Nitijela, the country's national parliament. She is the first woman to hold the post, which is an important demonstration of the empowerment of women and of their increased political participation in the Pacific.

Today's decision by the Federal Government of Somalia on a model for the electoral process in August this year is an essential step for the country.  The comprehensive national consultations in the past months and the spirit of compromise demonstrate the commitment of the Somali Federal and regional leadership to put Somalia's interest first.  

The pledge that women and minorities should play a significant role is important.
