The Council approved conclusions reaffirming the importance of a solid and long-term partnership between the EU and the Sahel, and of stepping up that partnership through an ambitious EU strategy setting the framework for its policies and actions in the region.

This is going to be an informal meeting, because it is going to take place via video conference due to the COVID-19 constraints once again.

But the fact that it is going to be an informal meeting does not mean that we are not going to have important issues to deal with. In fact, there are two blocs.

First, the issues related with Russia. Starting with the Czech expulsion of Russian diplomats; we will be informed by our Czech colleague [Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jan Hamáček].

The EU and its Member States have long enjoyed a broad and comprehensive relationship with its partners in the Indo-Pacific, a region spanning from the east coast of Africa to the Pacific Island States. Today, the Indo-Pacific is the focus of the world’s attention as the socio-economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic gets underway whilst geostrategic uncertainty in the region increases.

The Indo-Pacific - spanning from the east coast of Africa to the Pacific Island States - is a region where
the EU has long enjoyed a broad and comprehensive relationship with our partners. The new Strategy
launched in April 2021 recommits the EU politically to the region with the aim of contributing to its
stability, security, prosperity and sustainable development, based on the promotion of democracy, rule
of law, human rights and international law.

Today, the 27th and final National Implementation Plan under the Civilian CSDP Compact was delivered. This is a significant step reconfirming the joint commitment by Member States to strengthen civilian Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP).
