30/11/2021 - HR/VP Blog – For years, Venezuela has been gripped by a political stalemate leading to a severe humanitarian crisis. Last Tuesday, our EU Election Observation Mission (EOM) made public its first findings on the country’s regional and municipal elections held on 21 November. To send this mission was a controversial decision, however I am convinced that it will contribute to help find a solution to the Venezuelan crisis through political dialogue.

Chair, Director General, Excellences and Distinguished Delegates,
I speak on behalf of the European Union and its Member States.
We thank the Director-General for his statement and the update on current activities.
However, before we turn to the present issues, allow me to extend on behalf of EU and its Member States our best wishes to IOM on its 70th birthday. Despite its advanced age it remains resilient, mobile and well governed. We remain committed to continuation of our strategic partnership in the future.

High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President of the European Commission, Josep Borrell, chaired today the third EU-Southern Neighbourhood Ministerial Meeting in Barcelona, in which Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement, Olivér Várhelyi, also participated.

في هذا اليوم، يحيي الاتحاد الأوروبي ذكرى أولئك الذين لقوا حتفهم وعانوا نتيجة استخدام الأسلحة الكيميائية.

On this day, the European Union commemorates those who have died and suffered as a result of the use of chemical weapons.

The prohibition of chemical weapons is the global norm today. Since the entry in force of the Chemical Weapons Convention in 1997, almost 99% of chemical weapon stockpiles declared by possessor States have been verifiably destroyed.

However, chemical weapons remain a serious threat to international peace and security. No one should make use of chemical weapons, be it a State or a non-State actor, anywhere, at any time and under any circumstances.
