On 27 May Nebraska became the 19th State in the United States to repeal the death penalty.

This is a historic step by the Nebraska Legislature, while the worldwide movement towards the abolition of capital punishment continues to grow.

The European Union opposes the death penalty and will continue - in all international fora - to promote and support the abolition of such cruel punishment, for the enhancement of human dignity.

High Representative/Vice President Federica Mogherini today addressed the second annual Southern Mediterranean Civil Society Forum, held in Brussels on 28-29 May. The objective of the Forum is to create mechanisms for a sustained and structured dialogue between civil society, the authorities and the EU at a regional level.

The visa-free regime applies to stays in the territories of the EU Member States, except for the Kingdom and Ireland.

Representatives of more than 100 civil society organisations, academics, media, government representatives, local authorities and international organisations from the Southern Neighbourhood and Europe gathered at the European Economic and Social Committee and Committee of the regions headquarters in Brussels for the second annual Southern Mediterranean Civil Society Forum. The Forum is part of an overall initiative aiming at an enhanced and more strategic engagement with civil society.

Les représentants de plus de cent organisations de la société civile, des universitaires, des médias, des représentants gouvernementaux, des collectivités locales et des organisations internationales du voisinage méridional et d'Europe se sont réunis à Bruxelles, au siège du Comité économique et social européen et du Comité des régions, à l'occasion du deuxième Forum annuel de la société civile de la Méditerranée méridionale.
