I know you have been standing or sitting here all day so I'll be brief. I know that the main focus of the day has been Syria and I will say a few words about that as well, but let me say that we had a very good Quartet meeting on the situation in the Middle East.


On 19 and 20 October 2015, the EU and ASEAN held a first policy dialogue on Human Rights as part of a one-week visit in Brussels of the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR), the ASEAN Commission on the promotion and Protection of the Rights of Women and Children (ACWC), the ASEAN Committee on Women (ACW), the ASEAN Committee on the Implementation of the ASEAN Declaration on the Protection and Promotion of the Migrant Workers (ACMW) and the ASEAN Secretariat (ASEC).


The ongoing detention of a number of human rights lawyers and defenders by Chinese public security forces in unknown locations, without access to legal counsel or visits from their relatives, continues to raise serious questions about China's stated commitment to strengthening the rule of law.


Le maintien en détention d'un certain nombre de défenseurs des droits de l’homme et d'avocats spécialisés dans cette matière par les forces de sécurité publique chinoises dans des lieux inconnus, sans qu'ils puissent bénéficier de la présence d’un avocat ou de la visite de leurs proches, continue de soulever de graves questions sur l'engagement déclaré par la Chine en faveur du renforcement de l’État de droit.


Federica Mogherini, High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President of the European Commission, spoke today with the Libyan Prime Minister Designate Fayez Al Sarraj to welcome his nomination and assure him of the European Union's full support for his work in the coming days, weeks and months in leading Libya out of its current impasse towards peace and stability.
