The presidential pardoning of six Sudanese human rights activists, including Dr Mudawi Ibrahim and Hafiz Idris, detained since December 2016, is a step in the right direction. The European Union expects this to be followed by further steps allowing for an opening of the political space and reinforced respect for fundamental freedoms and human rights in Sudan.
In June 2017, the highest decision-making body of the ESDC, the Steering Committee (SC), appointed Dr Mircea Mîndrescu as the new Chair of the Executive Academic Board (EAB) for the academic years 2017/18 and 2018/19. He follows Dr Antonio Missiroli, the Director of the EU Institute for Security Studies (EUISS) in Paris.
The new academic year of the European Security and Defence College will start on 1 September. The first course of this academic year will be launched on 4 September: a CSDP orientation course which will be run as part of the CSDP training programme for the Western Balkan region, hosted by Austria and the European Commission.
