At the invitation of the Government of the Republic of Haiti, the European Union established a mission to observe the country’s local, parliamentary and presidential elections in 2015. These elections were held in several rounds, the first of which was conducted on 9 August 2015.

Ce matin, la capitale égyptienne a de nouveau été la cible d'un attentat à la bombe ayant fait de nombreux blessés. 

Nous souhaitons un prompt rétablissement aux victimes et nous exprimons notre soutien à la population égyptienne, qui reste confrontée aux conséquences dramatiques du terrorisme dans le pays. 

L’Union européenne soutient résolument le gouvernement et le peuple égyptiens dans la lutte contre le terrorisme.



This morning, the Egyptian capital of Cairo was once again targeted by a bomb attack which left many people injured. 

We hope for their speedy recovery and express our support to the Egyptian people, who continue to face the dire consequences of terrorism in their country. 

The EU stands firmly with the Government and people of Egypt in confronting terrorism.


Aujourd’hui, le policier estonien Eston Kohver, enlevé il y a près d’un an par les services de sécurité russes sur le territoire estonien, a été reconnu coupable par le tribunal régional de l’oblast de Pskov. Le jugement le condamne à 15 ans d’emprisonnement.



Today, almost one year after the abduction of Estonian police officer Eston Kohver by the Russian Security Services on Estonian territory, the Pskov Oblast's regional court rendered a verdict against him. The conviction carries a sentence of 15 years imprisonment.   


Parliamentary elections on 17 August in Sri Lanka were genuine, well administered and peaceful overall. The people of Sri Lanka came out to vote in high numbers, confirming their support for continued democratic reform. 
The new Government that will be formed as a result of this election will need to have among its priorities continued improvement in good governance, human rights and the rule of law as well as the crucial tasks of accountability and genuine national reconciliation. All political actors should play a constructive role in this process.


Today, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) declared  that schools are set to re-open for Palestinian children and refugees in neighbouring countries in Jordan, Lebanon and Syria in the coming weeks. This positive and encouraging news has been made possible thanks to EU support, as the largest donor to UNRWA, as well as important contributions from other partners and donor countries.
