Mr President, Honourable Members of the European Parliament, The human rights situation in Sudan constitutes a continuing worry for the European Union. The shrinking space for civil society organisations and restrictions on freedom of expression and assembly remain among the main areas of our concern. I personally also raised these issues during my visit to Sudan last October.

The European Parliament,

– having regard to its previous resolutions on Sudan,

– having regard to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights of 1966 to which the Republic of Sudan has been a state party since 1986,

– having regard to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child to which Sudan has been a State Party since 1990,

– having regard to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights of 1948,

– having regard to the UN General Assembly resolution of 19 December 2016 on child, early and forced marriage,

We, the ACP-EU Council of Ministers, Representing 107 countries from Africa, the Caribbean, the Pacific and the European Union, committed to the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development;

The European Union has deployed an Election Observation Mission to Zimbabwe to observe the harmonised elections, scheduled for 30 July 2018.
