Vietnam's recent ratification of both the UN Convention Against Torture and other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment and the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities is a crucial and welcome step. The EU stands ready to assist Vietnam in the full implementation of these key human rights Conventions.

The EU encourages all countries worldwide to ratify these Conventions and to respect their provisions.


La ratification récente par le Viêt Nam de la convention des Nations unies contre la torture et autres peines ou traitements cruels, inhumains ou dégradants et de la convention des Nations unies relative aux droits des personnes handicapées constitue une avancée cruciale et bienvenue. L’UE est aux côtés du Viêt Nam pour l'aider à appliquer dans tous leurs éléments ces conventions essentielles pour la protection des droits de l’homme.


This week marked 100 days in office for Federica Mogherini. It also saw her chairing a Foreign Affairs Council that focused on counter-terrorism and the unfolding situation in Ukraine. This was also a key issue at the European Council and during the European Parliament's plenary session in Strasbourg. The High Representative also facilitated a dialogue meeting between the Prime Ministers of Serbia and Kosovo, which finalised the agreement on justice and judiciary in ‪‎Kosovo. She also met Palestinian President Mahmoud ‪Abbas and chaired the seventh EU-Lebanon Association Council.

Today's agreement in Minsk is definitely a step in the right direction, a very important one, even if we know very well that this is not solving everything. But having good news is definitely better than having bad or very bad news.

The important thing now will be to see the ceasefire entering into force on the night between Saturday and Sunday.  And it will be looking at the implementation of the points that are included in the document.

On the International Day against the Use of Child Soldiers, the High Representative of the European  Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President of the Commission Federica Mogherini and the UN Special Representative for Children and Armed Conflict, Leila Zerrougui, renewed their commitment to work together to end the recruitment and use of children in armed conflict.


À l’occasion de la journée internationale contre l’exploitation des enfants soldats, la haute représentante de l’Union européenne pour les affaires étrangères et la politique de sécurité/vice-présidente de la Commission, Mme Federica Mogherini et la représentante spéciale des Nations unies pour les enfants et les conflits armés, Mme Leila Zerrougui, ont réitéré leur détermination à œuvrer de concert pour mettre fin à l'enrôlement d’enfants et à leur utilisation dans des conflits armés.


Launch press conference and reception

The celebratory year of the 40th Anniversary of the establishment of EU-China relations was officially launched on 12th February at a press conference hosted by EU Ambassador to China Hans Dietmar Schweisgut and was followed by a reception attended by China's Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Wang Chao alongside ambassadors and senior representatives of all 28 EU Member States.



This week's plenary in the European parliament was rich in debates on external relations and featured the active engagement of HRVP Mogherini.
