The European Union Representative issues the following statement in agreement with the EU Heads of Mission in Jerusalem and Ramallah.


24/11/2020 – HR/VP blog – With a ‘democratic recession’ underway and new threats to democracy emerging, we need to step up the defence of democracy, both at home and abroad. In particular, we should deepen our cooperation with fellow democracies to counter the rise of authoritarianism.

Madame President, Honourable Members, thank you very much for having this opportunity to address you today on a very important issue, the geopolitical implications of the recent agreements between Israel and the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and, recently, Sudan. And maybe many more in the future.

On behalf of the European Union, I have welcomed these announcements for three reasons:

Violence against women is a crime and it is the responsibility of the security institutions to fight and eliminate it" - His Excellency Iraq's Minister of Interior, Othman Al-Ghanmi, on the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women

The Youth-led Cultural & Civic Initiatives aim to encourage community-based and contextual projects using collaborative approaches and to raise knowledge and capacities of young artists, collectives and cultural operators from underserved areas on the development of contextual work, and community engagement in cultural and civic activities.

The component will offer:

The component will support up to 12 Cultural Alliances consisting of 36 cultural entities, who are seeking to strengthen their adaptive capacities and to engage in setting up a collaboration within Alliances as well as wider partnerships on the local, national and regional levels with the aim to strengthen the cultural ecosystem and to facilitate and increase access to culture within their contexts.

The component will offer:

In line with Commission President von der Leyen’s proposal for a Global Recovery Initiative, the EU is contributing €183 million to low-income countries’ debt relief. The support will free-up benefitting countries’ resources to increase their social, health and economic spending in response to the COVID-19 crisis.
