On 9 May 1950 Robert Schuman called on the nations of Europe to unite and make war on our continent impossible. 65 years later, his message of peace and unity is as relevant as ever.

 

"Suriname's recent ratification of a new penal code, which includes abolition of the death penalty, is an important step forward that sends a welcome signal to other countries in the region and beyond.

The European Union has a strong and principled policy on the abolition of the death penalty as it cannot be justified under any circumstances. This stance is rooted in the belief in the inherent dignity of all human beings and the inviolability of the human person. 

High Representative Federica Mogherini discusses European foreign policy and its challenges with Tony Barber of the Financial Times at The State of the Union conference in Florence.

Pour marquer le 65ème anniversaire de la Déclaration Schuman, l'Ambassadeur de l'Union européenne Marie-Anne Coninsx a organisé une réception à la mairie de la ville d'Ottawa. Parmi les invités d'honneur figuraient le Premier ministre de la Nouvelle Écosse Stephen McNeal, la Ministre québécoise des Relations Internationales et de la Francophonie Christine Saint-Pierre, ainsi que le sous-Ministre fédéral Daniel Jean.

In their June 2015 meeting, the Heads of State and Government of the European Union will assess progress on the Union's common actions in security and defence and provide guidance on the next steps in this important area.

 

The Israeli District Planning and Building Committee this week took a decision allowing for further settlement expansion in Ramat Shlomo. Already in November 2014, the EU's Foreign Ministers unanimously expressed their concerns at the announcement of new housing units and called on Israel to reverse that decision.

Le comité israélien de planification et de construction de district a pris cette semaine la décision d'autoriser une nouvelle extension de la colonie de Ramat Shlomo. En novembre 2014 déjà, les ministres des affaires étrangères de l'UE ont exprimé à l'unanimité leurs préoccupations à l'annonce de la construction de nouveaux logements et appelé Israël à revenir sur sa décision.
