Today's decision by the so-called Supreme Court of Crimea to prohibit the activities of the Mejlis, a self-governing body of the Crimean Tatars, labelling it "an extremist organisation", represents a grave attack on the rights of the Crimean Tatars as a whole. It constitutes a further very negative escalation in the human rights situation on the Crimean peninsula since its illegal annexation by the Russian Federation in 2014, including as regards the persecution of persons belonging to minorities.

Statement by the Spokesperson on the murder of activists in Bangladesh
 
Yesterday two Bangladeshi LGBTI activists were brutally murdered in a horrifying attack in Dhaka, which also left a policeman and a security guard injured.
 
With the killings of a law student on 6 April and of an English language professor on 23 April, this is already the third violent attack in Bangladesh in less than a month. 
 
We express our deepest condolences to the families of the victims and wish a speedy recovery to the injured. 
 

 

On 26 April 1986 the nuclear plant of Chernobyl in Ukraine ran a test that triggered a meltdown of the reactor, spewing out a cloud of radioactive material in the European sky.

More than thirty plant workers and firemen died in the immediate aftermath of the accident. The consequences of the radioactivity on the population and the environment are still under evaluation 30 years later. The worst nuclear disaster in history.

A group of prominent Russian journalists and editors, from all segments of the media landscape, including both state and privately owned outlets will meet their EU counterparts on 26 April in London to discuss the safety of journalists in digital age and to find new ways of collaboration in this area.
