Trade leaders from the EU and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) today agreed to take new steps towards resuming free trade talks between the two regions. The decision was taken at the annual EU-ASEAN ministerial consultations held in the Filipino capital of Manila, in which EU Commissioner for Trade Cecilia Malmström participated.

On behalf of the European Union I am honoured to participate in the thirteenth trade policy review of Japan and would like to welcome Japan's Delegation, led by Mr Uyama (Deputy-Director General, Economic Affairs Bureau, Ministry of Foreign Affairs) and the Discussant, H.E. Mr Braithwaite (UK), for his introductory words. Japan is an important strategic and economic partner of the European Union and a key player in the global trading system. We highly value the good cooperation between the EU and Japan.
