On 15 December 2017, on its 81th meeting, the ESDC Steering Committee decided by consensus, to recommend the prolongation of the mandate of the current Head for a maximum period of 4 years following his current contract.

In addition to the Austrian EU Presidency team, the hosts invited participants from other EU Member States and from the Eastern Partnership countries. The latter were sponsored via the Technical Assistance and Information Exchange instrument of the European Commission.

In response to this reality, the French Higher Institute for National Defence Studies (IHEDN) organised a course titled 'European Union facing "hybrid threats" challenges', which ran in Brussels from 6 to 8 December 2017 under the auspices of the European Security and Defence College (ESDC).
