We really had an intense day at the Foreign Affairs Council that will now continue also with our Defence Ministers on Libya. I will come to that in a moment.

Let me give you a short update on the fact that we had all the 28 EU Ministers of Foreign Affairs plus the ones of Defence connected with Tripoli in a video conference with Prime Minister [Fayez] al-Sarraj who shared with us his assessment on the political, security and economic situation of the country and

High Representative Federica Mogherini gathered the EU ministers of Foreign Affairs in Luxembourg on Monday 18 for the monthly Foreign Affairs Council meeting. The agenda included several pressing issues starting from the migration crisis to the common work with key partners.


Ecuador has been struck by a deadly earthquake causing multiple casualties.

Our thoughts are with the victims, their families and friends and all those affected.

The European Union stands in full solidarity with the people and authorities of Ecuador at this difficult time.

Recent peaceful protests have led to a disproportionate reaction by the Gambian security forces.

The EU is particularly concerned about the fate of Mr. Solo Sandeng and other opposition politicians who took part in the protest, as well as on reports on ill-treatment of persons taken into custody.

Gambia has taken on commitments under international conventions and the Cotonou agreement.
