On 10 December 2019 in Brussels, the European Union and Ukraine discussed the consequences of the illegal annexation of Crimea and Sevastopol. It was the seventh such meeting.

Dear students, professors, distinguished guests, ambassadors, colleagues from Brussels,

Ladies and Gentlemen!

English version of the op-ed of Ivan Surkoš, Ambassador of the European Union to Egypt, that was published in Arabic in Shorouk daily newspaper on the occasion of the International Human Rights Day.

The EU Delegation celebrated Human Rights Day 2019 with 60 international students from Geneva-based schools: To mark 71 years of the proclamation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) on 10 December 1948 and to also celebrate the 30th anniversary Child Rights Convention (CRC) this year, we combined both anniversaries by giving school children from from three international schools the chance to step into the shoes of EU Ambassadors and discuss alongside them how to update the Universal Declaration in a "Model Ambassadorial Meeting".

We celebrate this year the 10th anniversary of the Charter of the Fundamental Rights and the 30th anniversary of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. Yet these rights continue to be challenged around the world. In particular, children and youth continue to be the main victims of human rights violations. They are forced to seek refuge, recruited as soldiers, forced into child labour or torn apart from their families against their will.
