The European Parliament and the Council of the European Union, represented by the Portuguese Presidency, today signed the regulation establishing the Neighbourhood, Development and International Cooperation Instrument - Global Europe (NDICI-Global Europe). The regulation will enter into force on 14 June 2021.
The changes to the electoral system adopted by the Standing Committee of China’s National People’s Congress (NPC) in March 2021 and passed by Hong Kong’s Legislative Council on 27 May 2021 are another breach of the “One Country Two Systems” principle. These changes run counter to the commitments to greater democratic representation enshrined in the Hong Kong Basic Law.
Let us have our last debate today with a little more of a positive perspective. Because talking about multilateralism is a good thing and I am happy that this report is being presented today to the European Parliament.
