On behalf of the European Union I am honoured to participate in the thirteenth trade policy review of Japan and would like to welcome Japan's Delegation, led by Mr Uyama (Deputy-Director General, Economic Affairs Bureau, Ministry of Foreign Affairs) and the Discussant, H.E. Mr Braithwaite (UK), for his introductory words. Japan is an important strategic and economic partner of the European Union and a key player in the global trading system. We highly value the good cooperation between the EU and Japan.
Today, on International Women's Day, the European Commission is publishing a call for proposals on "Women & Sustainable Energy" making €20 million available for grants to implement activities promoting women's entrepreneurship in the sustainable energy sector in developing countries.

The European Union has partnered with the EBRD since 2012 in implementation of the Advice for Small Business Programme in Egypt. This programme has become a true success – demand for the business development services offered by the Programme is at a constant increase thanks to the high quality of the services provided and in addition due to the vast numbers of small businesses in Egypt.

Offering support to small businesses is a key priority for both the EU and EBRD as they represent the backbone of the economy in Egypt and hold a tremendous potential for strengthening economic resilience. Financing and consultancy services have been provided to 500 enterprises in cooperation with partner banks and micro-finance institutions under the umbrella of the EU/EBRD Small Business Initiative. In addition to financing, the Initiative also provides business advice through local and international experts to help them grow and become catalysts for the local and regional economies. The EBRD started its operations in Egypt in 2012 while the EU/Egypt partnership is anchored on the Association Agreement signed in 2004.
