Karmenu Vella, Member of the EC in charge of Environment, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, and Violeta Bulc, Member of the EC in charge of Transport, attended the ceremony to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the diplomatic relations between the EU and China. On this occasion, Yang Yanyi, Head of the Mission of China to the EU, and Helga Schmid, Deputy Secretary-General of the European External Action Service (EEAS), pronounced a speech in honour of four decades of cooperation between the two parties.

Thank you very much. It is really a pleasure for me to be here today with you, Mr. State Councillor. It is not only a very important and fruitful meeting, but it also comes at a very timely moment.
We have a long history of relationship, 40 years is the time for maturity in a relationship. This means that we are ready to take stock of the achievements we have made, to face the differences - and sometimes also the difficulties- of a relationship, but also able to overcome them in a spirit of mutual cooperation.
