Today, on the first International Day of Commemoration and Dignity of the Victims of the Crime of Genocide and of the Prevention of this Crime, High Representative Federica Mogherini commemorated the victims of genocide and remembered the common European commitment to prevent atrocity crime.

The Baku Court of Appeal decided today to transfer human rights defender Dr Leyla Yunus to house arrest on medical grounds. This is a welcome and positive humanitarian gesture which follows a similar decision on 12 November with regard to Dr Yunus' husband, Mr Arif Yunus. The European Union hopes further steps will follow. We are ready to further deepen and broaden our relations with Azerbaijan.


Federica Mogherini, High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President of the European Commission, has appointed Patricia Llombart Cussac as the new Director for Security, Infrastructure, Budget and Information Technology and Dr. Gerhard Conrad as the new Director for the Intelligence and Situation Centre at the European External Action Service (EEAS).


Today, two executions were carried out in Japan, adding to the nineteen other persons that have been executed by Japan since March 2012. The EU has consistently and repeatedly called on the Japanese authorities to adopt a moratorium on executions, recalling the period of 20 months before March 2012 when no executions in the country took place.

L'UE n'a eu de cesse d'appeler les autorités japonaises à décréter un moratoire sur les exécutions, rappelant la période de 20 mois avant mars 2012, au cours de laquelle aucune exécution n'avait été enregistrée dans le pays.
