MD Africa, Koen Vervaeke, accompanied Commissioner Mimica visit to Burkina Faso to bring a message of support to the Burkinabé people following the terrorist attacks of 15th January and also to congratulate newly elected President Kaboré who took office on 29 December following a year of Transition in the country.

The coordination team from the European Union's election observation mission arrived in the country on 5 March to observe the general election that will take place on 10 April 2016.


Federica Mogherini, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President of the European Commission, met today in Brussels with the H.E. Abdul Malek Al Mekhlafi, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Yemen to discuss the current political and humanitarian situation in the country and prospects for resolution of the conflict.

Free, diverse and independent media constitute one of the cornerstones of a democratic society by facilitating the free flow of information and ideas, and by ensuring transparency and accountability.

The 17th East African Community Summit (EAC) that took place recently in Arusha, Tanzania confirmed the region's commitment to pursue a mediated inter-Burundian dialogue.

The designation of the former President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Benjamin W Mkapa, to facilitate the activities of the EAC mediator President Museveni, should give a much-needed and urgent boost to inclusive inter-Burundian dialogue without preconditions, as underlined by the high-level African Union delegation who recently visited Burundi.
