Since becoming operational in April of 2016 the regional Agadez office of EUCAP Sahel Niger has helped contribute to the capacity of local security forces dealing with security threats in Agadez and the region. These threats include drug and weapons trafficking as well as crimes associated with irregular migration networks such as document fraud and trafficking in human beings.
Agadez, almost 1000 kilometers from the capital Niamey and capital of the Tuareg regions for centuries, became a popular tourist destination in the 1980s. But since the Tuareg insurgency of the 1990s, the fall of the regime in Libya and the crisis in Mali, instability has gained ground in much of the region, and the tourists have disappeared. Instead, an alternative economy has established itself around the flow of migrants trying to reach Europe, crossing the Sahara to Libya, often with tragic consequences.
In the first half of 2017, a total of almost 8,000 settlement units in the West Bank including East Jerusalem were advanced in different stages in the planning and implementation process. Almost 5,000 housing units were promoted through plans and close to 3,000 housing units were advanced through tenders. This development will over several years enable potentially more than 30,000 Israeli settlers to move to the Occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem.
