On Monday, 9 May, the High Representative/Vice-President Federica Mogherini will participate at the meeting of Friends of Syria on ministerial level in Paris, also in presence of the Syrian opposition representative, Riyad Hijab.

The meeting will aim at supporting the Geneva process and preparing for the next round of intra-Syrian talks in order for parties in conflict to reach an agreement for a political transition in Syria.

Despite the many calls made by the European Union, another execution has been carried out in Belarus. The case of Syarhey Iwanow, who had been sentenced to death by the Supreme Court of Belarus in March 2015, is particularly disturbing in light of the fact that his complaint was pending with the UN Human Rights Committee.

The death sentence against Sergei Khmelevsky, which was upheld by the Belarus Supreme Court on 6 May, has also been confirmed.

On 6 May in the Sala Regia of the Apostolic Palace at the Vatican, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, together with European Parliament President Martin Schulz and European Council President Donald Tusk took part in the ceremony awarding the Charlemagne Prize to Pope Francis.
