The European Union supports Nigeria's efforts to fight terrorism and improve security in northern Nigeria, where conflict with Boko Harram has claimed tens of thousands of lives. European Commissioner Karmenu Vella today presented the work of the EU in Nigeria to the Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) as part of an "urgency" debate on human rights, democracy and rule of law in the country.

The European Union and the Russian Federation have signed Agreements on financing and implementation of two Cross Border Cooperation Programmes “Lithuania – Russia” and “Poland – Russia”. These EU–Russia Programmes for the period 2014-2020 worth € 88 million.

On 17 January 2018, European Parliament voted on the revision of the Renewable Energy Directive (RED). The European Parliament seeks to reduce to zero by 2021 biofuels and bioliquids produced from palm oil in the calculation of the Member State's consumption of energy from renewable energy sources.
