High Representative/Vice-President Josep Borrell spoke on Thursday with the Prime Minister of Albania, Edi Rama. HRVP Borrell reiterated his great satisfaction at the Council's decision to open accession negotiations with both Albania and North Macedonia. The High Representative stressed that this was a good news for the countries, the Western Balkans and the European Union.
The High Representative and the Prime Minister discussed continued international cooperation to combat the spread of the coronavirus pandemic and the importance of dealing with immediate needs for the emergency. They concurred that strong and coordinated action is needed to address the impact of this pandemic on society and economy. Josep Borrell underlined that the European Union was working intensively with the Western Balkans, and that cooperation and solidarity are crucial. He referred to the specific support the Commission has redirected to Albania - over €50 million - for immediate support in the health sector and socio-economic recovery of the country.
The High Representative/Vice-President concluded that the European Union will continue to stand by Albania.
