The EU-Japan strategic partnership is based upon longstanding cooperation, shared values and principles such as democracy, the rule of law, human rights, good governance, multilateralism and open market economies. Japan is one of the EU’s closest and most like-minded partners. Over the years, EU–Japan relations have been developing steadily, from enhanced political cooperation to trade and investment, and other areas of interest, ranging from development to climate, research, innovation and growth. Under the new Strategic Partnership Agreement, EU and Japan will expand this cooperation into new areas and strengthen it, especially on matters pertaining to security.
