In horticulture some of the most important periods for successful fruit production are pre-harvest, harvest and post-harvest. This is the time when most of the farmers “drop the ball,” which leads to fruit loss, excess damage and poor quality. Because right before harvest the fruit is most vulnerable for bacterial and fungal diseases.

On August 07-14 a training on “Harvest and Post-harvest fruit quality control/orchard fall works” were organized by EU funded Project “Sustainable Development in Rural Areas of Uzbekistan” in Namangan, Ferghana, Kashkadarya and Jizzakh regions.

The main purpose of the trainings was to strengthen the capacities of fruit farmers in such topics like methods to find the correct fruit maturity time for picking, use of pre harvest fruit treatment methods to extend their shelf life etc.

The trainings were led by international orchard management specialist Patrick Brady who has more than 25 years’ experience in IPM and orchard management systems. There was a lot of interest in the trainings and the farmers asked many questions as they realize this is an area in which they need to learn more because it has such a big impact on their final profit.
