A consultative workshop to explore the best modalities for South Sudan’s first copyright policy is underway in Juba.

With funding from the European Union, UNESCO has brought together key policy makers and stakeholders to consult, discuss, identify, and asses the context, needs, human and institutional resources available to come up the copyright policy for South Sudan in the cultural and creative industries (CCI).

Speaking at the opening of the three-day (Wednesday-Friday) workshop, the European Union’s Deputy Head of Mission hailed the Ministry of Ministry of Culture, Museum and National Heritage together with UNESCO for the great initiative in leading the way in making CCI a viable industry.

"Culture and innovation are key to Sustainable Development Goals, also in South Sudan. I would like to thank the Ministry of Culture, Museum and National Heritage together with UNESCO for inviting us today,” Alessandro Rossi said on Wednesday.

“This training is another important milestone where various actors meet to discuss and design copy right policy to support sustainable systems of governance for CCI. Promoting policies that support entrepreneurship, creativity and innovation, and encourage formalization and growth of Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises.”

The workshop is expected to increase awareness and understanding of the UNESCO 2005 Convention and the potential contribution of the CCIs to sustainable development in South Sudan.

The EU in December 2018 ratified the convention on the Protection and Promotion of Diversity of Cultural Expression.
