The first ever staff retreat for Parliament of Sierra Leone under the theme “Prepare well, Perform better”, opened this morning in Kenema district with the Clerk of Parliament Hon. Paran Umar Tarawally promising a more vibrant legislature in 2019. Among others, he said “I want to see a staff base that is knowledgeable about their work place and roles of parliament.” The retreat, which is being supported by the European Union and Westminster Foundation for Democracy, has brought together some 150 members of staff as a way of ensuring that “every staff gets to know what Parliament of Sierra Leone is all about.” This is coming in the wake of the EU's support towards training of media on effective reporting on parliament last week which was graced by the EU Ambassador, Tom Vens. He reminded all about the EU's commitment to human rights and the need for journalists to be bold and responsible in communicating to the public. The EU has also recently supported the Department of Parliamentary Assistance Coordination to hold a Partners' Meeting where current and upcoming projects for strengthening democracy in SL were outlined. Currently, the EU is supporting SL parliament with an international media expert to develop its Communications Strategy. Please, join us in celebrating the good work going on at Parliament as we promise more at HRMO/PSC and NEC in 2019.
