Towards a Sustainable Blue Economy in Kenya

28/11/2018 - 05:40

The European Union is committed to help build a sustainable blue economy in Kenya. It has a huge potential, both in terms of economic growth and towards building a more sustainable environment.

The blue economy has a huge potential to drive sustainable growth. For instance, in the European Union, it generates 566 billion EUR and creates jobs for nearly 3.5 million people.

At the Blue Economy Conference in Nairobi, Karmenu Vella - European Commissioner for Environment, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries - has highlighted that "The European Union is here to help build a sustainable blue economy. In partnership, for progress and with sustainability."

In Kenya, this partnership will be materialising through a joint initiative between the European Union and the Government of Kenya. The extraordinary beauty, great diversity and cultural wealth of Kenya's coastal areas have made them an important engine for Kenya's Blue Economy. A new joint initiative, namely 'Go Blue', will contribute to unlocking precisely these potential sea-land opportunities in coastal urban centres by promoting sustainable economic growth, sea-land development and maritime law enforcement.
