Kofi Annan died on August 18 aged 80 at his home in Switzerland after a short illness and was laid to rest on Thursday September 13, after a state funeral attended by some world leaders, diplomats and traditional authorities among others.

He was buried at the Military Cemetery at Burma Camp and was accorded military honours including a 17 gun- salute.

The current head of the world body, Antonio Gutteres, attended the funeral in Accra and paid glowing tributes to Kofi Annan.

Several African leaders also attended the funeral, among them, the Ivorian president Alassane Ouattara, the Ethiopian President Dr Mulato Teshome and Liberia George Weah, the Niger Prime Minister Brigi Rafini, the Namibian President Hage Geingob, the Sierra Leone President Julius Maada Bio, the Angolan Vice-President Manuel Domingos Vicente and the Burkinabe Foreign Minister Alpha Barry came to pay a special tribute to the late UN Secretary-General. The African Union chairman Moussa Faki Mahamat was also present for the funeral.

Other global leaders and diplomats such as the representative of Qatar President Thani Hamad Khalifa Hamad Al-Thani, the former Queen of the Netherlands Princess Beatrix, the US deputy-secretary of State Andrea Thompson, the Canadian Minister of international Development Marie-Claude Bibeau, and the former French Minister of Foreign Affairs Hubert Védrine attended the memorial ceremony.

Ghanaians from all walks of life earlier filed past and payed their last respects to the global icon whose body was laid in state since Tuesday after it arrived from Switzerland on Monday.
