EU awards Erasmus+ Scholarships to 260 Indonesian students and lecturers to study in Europe
A total of 260 Indonesian students and lecturers have been awarded the prestigious Erasmus+ scholarship for the 2025 academic year, funded by the European Union (EU). These awardees will join students from around the world in pursuing postgraduate degrees and participating in short-term exchanges at various universities in Europe.
From that figure, 73 of them are recipients of the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s (EMJM) scholarships, which places Indonesia at the 8th among the countries with the highest number of EMJM scholarship recipients in the world. These students will undertake master’s degrees for up to two years in two or more EU Member States, studying a wide range of academic disciplines.
In addition to EMJM, 187 students and university lecturers have been awarded short-term exchange Erasmus+ mobility scholarships for study, teaching, or taking part in training at European universities. Similarly, 75 European students and scholars from Europe will also come to Indonesia to study and lecture with the same scholarship. Since its inception in 2004, nearly 3.000 Indonesian students and lecturers have been awarded the Erasmus+ scholarships.
Mr Thibaut Portevin, Counsellor/ Head of Cooperation of the EU Delegation to Indonesia said, “Higher education and research is one of the EU cooperation priorities under the Global Gateway Strategy to mobilise investment in infrastructure and build links with partner countries. I extend my congratulations to all students who have received the scholarships. Through the Erasmus+ programme, we are proud to invest in Indonesia’s future. Erasmus+ awardees are future leaders who will help shape a greener, more inclusive, and digital world, while strengthening ties and collaboration between Europe and Indonesia. The programme offers students the opportunity to study and live across multiple universities in EU Member States. It is a unique experience that enhances knowledge, sharpens skills, and expands international networks”.
Dr Yulita Priyoningsih, Sub-Coordinator of Recognition Prior Learning & International Learning, Ministry of Higher Education Science and Technology of the Republic of Indonesia stated, “Through the unwavering support of the European Union and the Erasmus+ Programme, we are strengthening people-to-people ties between Indonesia and Europe—fostering internationalisation and advancing academic mobility in our higher education landscape.”
Representing her fellow awardees, Ms Noer Risky Ramadhani expressed her excitement on embarking on her postgraduate studies in Europe: “We are about to embark on a once-in-a-lifetime journey across countries, across cultures, across disciplines. As we step into new academic and cultural environments, let us carry our identity as students from Indonesia with dignity. Let us bring warmth, respect, and the spirit of Indonesia to every classroom and every conversation. We are committed not only to academic excellence but also to building bridges between cultures, promoting mutual understanding, and returning as changemakers for our communities and our country.”
The Erasmus+ Awardees Pre-Departure Event held today brought together Erasmus+ awardees, Erasmus alumni, and EU and Member State representatives. During the event, the Erasmus Mundus Student and Alumni Association (EMA) Indonesia, an official organisation of Erasmus+ alumni in Indonesia, delivered an introduction about EMA Indonesia and a sharing session for awardees to be more prepared prior to their Erasmus+ studies.
