António Costa, the President of the European Council, had today a good and inspiring exchange with Pope Leo XIV. The EU and the Holy See work closely together on many pressing global issues, such as achieving an authentic, just and lasting peace in Ukraine, improving the humanitarian situation in Gaza, combating climate change and addressing inequalities in the world. 

With Cardinal Pietro Parolin, we then deepened the conversation further in the context of the structured dialogue on foreign policy which the EU has with the Holy See since 2015 and that was relaunched by Kaja Kallas in February this year. 

In an increasingly volatile geopolitical context, the EU and the Holy See are and remain committed to the rules-based international order and effective multilateralism.
