EUCAP’s medical team in action: Strengthening the Fight Against Malaria Within the Security Forces

On May 28, 2025 EUCAP Sahel Mali’s Medical Unit conducted a specialized training for the National Gendarmerie’s medical personnel, enhancing their skills in malaria prevention and treatment. This marks the start of a training series aimed at improving health outcomes and security collaboration, with upcoming sessions on hepatitis and tuberculosis.

The session took place at the National Gendarmerie School and brought together 15 trainees — 8 women and 7 men — primarily nurses, doctors, and laboratory technicians from the school’s Medical Center.

This initiative, led by the EUCAP Sahel Mali Medical Unit, aimed to strengthen healthcare workers’ skills in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of malaria — a disease of particular concern during the rainy season.

To ensure the relevance and quality of the content, the Mission called on experts from the Applied Molecular Biology Laboratory of the Faculty of Science and Technology of Bamako, allowing the training to be adapted to local realities.

Beyond the technical aspect, this training is part of a broader effort to strengthen national capacities in community health and security by helping to build bridges between medical and security action, in service of the well-being of security forces and the protection of the population.

This session marks the launch of a training cycle for the National Gendarmerie’s medical staff, aiming to reduce the incidence of infectious diseases within the forces. Two more training days are scheduled for July 2025, focusing on hepatitis and tuberculosis.
