Young Azerbaijanis gain insights into the EU at EuroSchool in Ismayilli

Eighteen bright young participants spent three inspiring days exploring the European Union in a dynamic and engaging learning environment in the picturesque region of Ismayilli. From 12 to 14 August 2025, the EU Delegation jointly with the Young European Ambassadors organised the 8th edition of the EuroSchool for young motivated persons aged 18-25 from across the country. The aim was to enhance their awareness about the European Union, its functioning and values as well as the Eastern Partnership and EU-Azerbaijan relations through interactive sessions.

During the course of the programme, renown expert on foreign policy Ahmad Alili covered the EU history, Eastern Partnership initiative, EU-Azerbaijani relations, energy partnership with the EU, European aspirations in Azerbaijan. Based on the positive experience from the previous years, a session on tackling disinformation was held by media expert Seymur Kazimov. He explained to the participants the differences between disinformation, misinformation and shared ways to detect fake news.

In addition, representatives of the EU NEIGHBOURS East programme presented the Young European Ambassadors (YEAs) network that connects youth from the EU Member States and the Eastern Partnership countries, including Azerbaijan. The Young European Ambassadors also facilitated sessions on youth engagement, EU-funded opportunities and moderated debates. 

Beyond insightful sessions and discussions, the participants had a unique opportunity to visit a historic settlement of Basqal in the Ismayilli village, capturing memorable moments along the way.

Gediminas Varanavicius, Deputy Head of Mission closed the event. In his speech titled “The European Union in a changing world” he presented main challenges that are confronting the EU. He spoke about the role of the EU as a global actor. In this context, he touched upon the work of the EU Delegation in Azerbaijan, areas of the EU-Azerbaijan cooperation and other topics, giving the participants an opportunity to ask questions and engage in a discussion.

By the end of the EuroSchool, the participants had a better understanding of the internal EU processes and EU activities in Azerbaijan. Participants received certificates of completion. Three participants received special awards for being the most active in sharing social media posts about the EuroSchool.
