About the Ambassador

 

Artis Bertulis is the Ambassador of the European Union to the Republic of Guinea-Bissau since 2022. He previously served as Latvian diplomat and was the Ambassador of Latvia to Sweden, Portugal, Brazil, Italy, Albania, Malta, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), San Marino, India and Sri Lanka.

 

The European Union is a historic partner of Guinea-Bissau. The diplomatic relations between the two date from more than 47 years ago.

Ambassador Artis Bertulis is the Head of the European Union Delegation to the Republic of Guinea-Bissau. In this capacity, he is the highest diplomatic representative of the European Union in the country and oversees the extensive bilateral cooperation partnership. 

The Ambassador has the express objective of strengthening the already excellent relations between the European Union and Guinea-Bissau. He further aims to expand into new areas the already broad bilateral partnership between the two.

Message from the Ambassador

 

Welcome to the website of the European Union Delegation to Guinea-Bissau.

I had the honour of starting my mission as Ambassador of the European Union to the Republic of Guinea-Bissau in 2022.

During my first year in Bissau, I have witnessed how broad the partnership between Guinea-Bissau and the European Union is and how strong our friendship is. The European Union is a historic partner of Guinea-Bissau, being the country’s largest donor and cooperation partner. Our partnership covers a wide range of areas, including fisheries, education, health, good governance and infrastructure.

The European Union remains committed to Guinea-Bissau and its people, which we consider a brother people. It is precisely for the people that the European Union does its best every day to support Guinea-Bissau. We do it under the motto “leaving no one behind” because we know that every story is a story, that every single people counts, and that our mission is to support everyone we can.

I express my personal commitment to strengthen the actions of the European Union in Guinea-Bissau and to make them more efficient, in order to ensure that our support goes where it is needed the most and where it best promotes the human and economic development of Guinea-Bissau. I am particularly focused on ensuring equality of opportunities, especial to women and girls, and in making sure that the less privileged have a real chance of exploiting their potential and realising their dreams.

I am determined to strengthen the spirit of teamwork with our Member States by promoting a Team Europe approach.

I am also committed to ensuring that Guinea-Bissau remains a privileged partner of the European Union, including through its integration into the Global Gateways programme.
