The European Union is a unique partnership between 27 European countries, known as Member States, or EU countries. Together they cover much of the European continent. The EU is home to around 447 million people, which is around 6% of the world’s population. Citizens of the EU countries are also EU citizens. The EU has a rich cultural and linguistic diversity. The languages spoken in EU countries are an essential part of its cultural heritage. This is why the EU supports multilingualism and has 24 official languages

What began as a purely economic union has evolved into an organisation spanning many different policy areas – from climate, environment and health to external relations and security, justice and migration.
