Chairman's official visit to Italy

The Chairman of EU Military Committee - General Claudio Graziano - paid an official visit to the Armed Forces of the Italian Republic from the 16th to the 18th of June, following an invitation from the Italian CHOD, General Enzo VECCIARELLI.


He had the opportunity to meet with the President of the Republic, Sergio MATTARELLA, the Prime Minister, Mario DRAGHI and with the Minister of Defence, Lorenzo GUERINI. The discussions covered all current CSDP matters, but also the regional situation as well as the broader perspectives on European security and defence developments.

With all the interlocutors, the Chairman discussed about EU Common Defence focusing in particular their attention on the Central Mediterranean and Libya as well as on the situation in the Sahel region. With the Minister of Defence, Lorenzo GUERINI it has been stressed the potential instability coming from the Sahel through Libya: illegal immigration, the growth of the terrorist threat, the risk of failed states are the challenges that still affect that area. In this regard, the Chairman stated the importance to intervene on the root causes of the crisis also with military missions and operations and they convened on the urge of an EU strategic reflection on how to better synchronise all the international efforts in the region.

During the visit, the CEUMC was requested to hold a hearing about the EU initiatives for the Defence Industries and the military capability development at the Defence Commission of the Italian Chamber of the Parliament.
