ACP-EU Partnership Agreement

EU support has focused on addressing the population's basic energy needs: aiming to provide renewable energy, promote energy efficiency/self-sufficiency, and contribute to a cleaner environment.

Development cooperation

In 2014-20, EU funding of €2.4 million – through the European Development Fund – will concentrate on the energy sector:

• energy efficiency / renewables – building on successful EDF initiatives so far the programme by completing the replacement/upgrading of the national grid transmission and distribution network and installing  a 300KWsolar panel plant will provide a reliable, affordable, secure and sustainable energy supply to meet the socio economic development needs of Nauru.                                                                    This programme is also relevant for the Agenda 2030. It contributes primarily to the progressive achievement of Sustainable Development Goal target 7, ensuring access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all, but also promotes progress towards target 13, taking urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts.
• support measures – In addition, the EU will provide support to the National Authorising Officer (NAO) or relevant offices and agencies throughout the entire EDF 11 life-cycle to ensure that Nauru fully benefits from the various programmes the EU supports in the region.

Nauru will also benefit considerably from regional funding under the forthcoming Regional Indicative Programme for the Pacific, which is focused on:

• regional economic integration, including trade-related assistance
• sustainable management of natural resources
• governance, support for non-state groups and capacity building.

Funding may be complemented by operations financed by the EIB, through the:

• Cotonou Investment Facility
• Investment Facility for the Pacific and/or
• EIB's own resources.
