In line with the objective of contributing to a political, peaceful solution and of keeping the channels of communication open with all relevant Venezuelan actors, the Heads of Mission of the European Union participated yesterday in a meeting - to which they were summoned - in the Presidential Palace and met today with the leadership of the National Assembly.
In both meetings the Heads of Mission reiterated the EU position as laid out in the last Council conclusions and the Declaration by the High Representative on behalf of the European Union of 10 January, calling for the respect of democracy, rule of law and fundamental freedoms; the recognition and respect of the powers and prerogatives of the National Assembly, including the immunity of its members; the holding of new free elections in line with international standards; the release of all political prisoners and the urgent address of the most pressing needs of the population. The proposal, currently in discussion, of setting up an International Contact Group, aimed at creating the conditions for a political, democratic and peaceful solution, was equally mentioned.
The European Union will continue its work, including through the action of its diplomatic representatives in the country, to overcome the current crisis and bring back democracy and stability.
