Despite repeated appeals by the international community for parties to the conflict in Yemen to adhere to the call of the UN Secretary General for a ceasefire, military confrontations continue.
The recent missile attack by Ansar Allah movement against Saudi Arabia is in this regard a matter of grave concern for the European Union, as is the ongoing military activity in and around the province of Marib and latest airstrikes in the capital Sana'a.
This goes completely against the calls by the United Nations for a ceasefire, as well as most recent EU statements, at a time when the parties should stop hostilities and be united in fighting the coronavirus pandemic.
The European Union therefore reiterates the statement issued by the UN Special Envoy Martin Griffiths on the need for an immediate halt of armed confrontations and calls on the parties to seize this moment’s potential for de-escalation and use it to establish a formal ceasefire.
The European Union will continue to fully support the UN-led process with all the tools at its disposal.
