Statement by the Spokesperson on the occasion of the signing of a peace and reconciliation agreement in the Central African Republic

The signing in Bangui on 6 February 2019 of a Peace Agreement in the Central African Republic between the Central African government and armed groups paves the way for the lasting stabilisation and recovery of the country.

The Agreement demonstrates the sense of responsibility of the government and the armed groups. This success is also due to the leadership of President Faustin-Archange Touadéra and the involvement of the African Union, in particular the personal commitment of Ambassador Smail Chergui, the African Union Commissioner for Peace and Security.

It is now up to the various Central African parties to honour their commitments and ensure that the implementation of the agreement responds in a lasting and inclusive manner to the expectations of the people of the Central African Republic, particularly in the fields of security, justice and reconciliation, and development, while respecting the core values and principles deriving from the Constitution.

In coordination with the United Nations, the African Union, neighbouring countries and other international players, the European Union will continue its crucial and multi-faceted support, including for the implementation of this Agreement.

The European Union, which is a long-standing partner of the Central African Republic, currently has available €715 million for the period 2014-2020; all its instruments, including the Bêkou Trust Fund, are being mobilised to address humanitarian needs and support development and reform in the country, particularly in education, health and agriculture, in the field of justice, reconciliation and governance, in support of the reform of the security sector, and also to strengthen civil society and the management of natural resources. The EUTM RCA mission will continue its mandate in support of the country’s security and defence forces.
