Press releases

It is with great sadness that we learned about the departure of Lieutenant General Wolfgang Wosolsobe, former Director General of the EU Military Staff.

Following an outstanding career in the Austrian Armed Forces and Ministry of Defence, Wolfgang Wosolsobe assumed the position of Director General EU Military Staff in May 2013 and served in this position with distinction for three years. During his tenure, he was responsible for overseeing the military support to ongoing and newly launched CSDP operations and missions, including Op EUNAVFOR, OP ATALANTA, Op ALTHEA, EUTM SOM, EUTM MALI and EUFOR/EUTM RCA.

Moreover, supported by his loyal staff, he delivered the military expertise and contribution to the four main EEAS initiatives: the development of the EU's Global Strategy on Foreign and Security Policy; the development of the NATO – EU Joint Declaration; the review of the EU's Defence package; and the review of the EEAS crisis management structures, the latter resulting in the establishment of the EU's Military Planning and Conduct Capability (MPCC).

Furthermore, Lieutenant General Wosolsobe played a prominent role in guiding the EUMS's support to the EU Military Committee in several key military areas during a challenging period of strategic change in the global environment.  He orchestrated the EU military's contribution to countering the emerging Hybrid Threat, to the EU's Maritime Security Strategy and to Cyber Defence.

His success was built on his openness and his ability to build bridges between the military and the civilian domains based on trust within a strong global network. We have lost a true professional.

Lieutenant General Wosolsobe leaves to mourn his loss his wife and four sons. Our heartfelt condolences to his family.
