"In the European Union, we don't see a contradiction between interests and values. Promoting rights is the best investment for security" said the High Representative Federica Mogherini today in a debate on Cooperation and Partnerships, the European Way during The State of Union 2017 ‘Building a Europe’s People organised by the European University Institute (EUI).

During the debate moderated by Roula Khalaf, Deputy Editor of the Financial Times, Mogherini answered a broad range of questions on Foreign Policy issues going from the EU-US relations to the Western Balkans.

Asked about the relations with the United states, Mogherini said that "I see a reality that goes beyond the narrative and stays engaged in a strong EU-US relation" adding that there are opportunities behind every challenge.  Differences such as climate change but also development, free trade "which we see as opportunity for growth and protection of EU interests" remain but the EU and the US are aligned on certain issues like Syria. Mogherini believes that "US friends realise that we have not just historical and cultural ties but also strong common interests".
