The decision of the Phnom Penh Municipal Court to ease the conditions of detention of Cambodian opposition leader Kem Sokha is a first step in the right direction. However, Kem Sokha remains under court supervision, his case is not closed and he is banned from engaging in any political activities.

In view of the continuing protests in Bolivia the European Union underlines the need for the demonstrations to remain peaceful. Violence must be avoided, as it will not bring a solution to the current crisis.

Such a solution can only be achieved through peaceful negotiations, a credible electoral process that guarantees that the people’s will is respected and strong democratic institutions.

More than a thousand global leaders, politicians, activists, experts and young people from all over the world gathered in Strasbourg this week for the 2019 edition of the World Forum for Democracy, where they discussed democracy in the information age. Hosted by the Council of Europe, the forum provides a unique platform for debating solutions to key questions for democracies worldwide.

 

The 13th edition of the Eastern Partnership Panel on Security, CSDP and Civil protection convened on 7 November in Brussels. The Panel gathered over 70 participants from all EaP countries (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Republic of Moldova, Ukraine and Belarus), Member States, EU institutions and Civil Society Forum.

It will soon be easier and more profitable to trade with Singapore. The free trade agreement (FTA) signed by the European Union and the Republic of Singapore on 19 October 2018 is due to enter into force on 21 November 2019, as a consequence of the decision adopted by the Council today on the conclusion of this agreement.
