In a world that has become increasingly complex and contested, Europe has stepped up its work on defence over the past few years. Permanent Structured Cooperation on security and defence is one of the new instruments in the EU’s toolbox. Under this framework, 13 new projects for European cooperation on defence have just been agreed by EU Ministers.
The Council focused in particular on PESCO (Permanent Structured Cooperation) and adopted a decision launching thirteen new PESCO projects. Defence ministers also discussed the coherence between PESCO and the other EU defence initiatives, including the Coordinated Annual Review on Defence (CARD) and the European Defence Fund.
High Representative/Vice-President Federica Mogherini today met the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Abdulaziz Kamilov, and the First Deputy Chairman of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Sadyk Safoev. They discussed a number of issues on which the European Union and the Republic of Uzbekistan share a common interest, including the peace process in Afghanistan, and regional cooperation in Central Asia.

Ante la transformación del entorno de seguridad, la Estrategia Global sobre Política Exterior y de Seguridad de la Unión Europea permitió poner en marcha un proceso de intensificación de la cooperación en materia seguridad y defensa. Los Estados miembros de la UE convinieron en impulsar la labor de la Unión Europea en esta materia y reconocieron que, para lograr este objetivo, era preciso mejorar la coordinación e incrementar las inversiones en defensa y la cooperación en cuanto al desarrollo de las capacidades de defensa.
