The Georgian Parliament appointed yesterday 14 members of the Supreme Court, a key institution for the proper functioning of Georgia’s legal system. The selection procedure did not adhere to all recommendations made by the Venice Commission and was characterised by key shortcomings, including a lack of transparency that undermines a genuinely merit-based nomination process. A number of the appointed candidates do not enjoy broad public trust, as was obvious in the course of the selection process.

A plane accident suffered by the Chilean Air Force on its way to Antarctica caused the loss of 38 lives.

The victims of this terrible accident were travelling to provide logistical support to a key base working on scientific research on the climate crisis, a fundamental work in the fight against climate change.

In this difficult moment, the European Union conveys its deepest condolences to the families of the victims, to the people of Chile and to the country’s authorities.
