High Representative/Vice-President Josep Borrell met with the Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation Sergey Lavrov, in the margins of the 76th session of the UN General Assembly on Thursday. They discussed EU-Russia relations as well as pressing international issues.


Nuclear weapon test explosions and related activities represent a serious threat to international peace and security. Strengthening the international disarmament, non-proliferation and arms control architecture is key to avoid a nuclear arms race.

The Council today appointed Rear Admiral Stefano Turchetto as EU Operation Commander for the European Union military operation in the Mediterranean (EUNAVFOR MED IRINI). He will take command from Rear Admiral Fabio Agostini on 1 October 2021.

  1. The XVII Meeting of the Chile-European Union Association Committee, established by the 2002 Association Agreement, was held, through videoconference on 22 September 2021. The Committee was co-chaired by the Director for the Americas of the European External Action Service, Mr Javier Niño Perez, and the Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs of Chile, Mrs Carolina Valdivia. The Parties approved the minutes of the XVI Association Committee, which took place in Santiago on 12 July 2019.

In response to an invitation by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Honduras, the European Union (EU) has decided to deploy an EU Election Observation Mission (EOM) for the general elections scheduled for 28 November 2021.

High Representative/Vice-President Josep Borrell met with United States Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, in the margins of the General Assembly of the United Nations (UNGA) in New York on Wednesday. The meeting was an opportunity to discuss issues related to the transatlantic agenda and pressing international developments.

The European Union calls for an immediate de-escalation in the north of Kosovo. Any provocations or unilateral actions must be avoided as they would go directly against the interest of the people of the region.

We urge the leadership in Belgrade and Pristina to take a responsible approach and to work through the EU facilitated Dialogue to avoid any further escalation, restore a peaceful atmosphere and to work on viable solutions. It is in the interests of all to look for a way forward that enables freedom of movement and which improves people’s daily lives.

High Representative/Vice-President Josep Borrell met in the margins of the General Assembly of the United Nations (UNGA) with Foreign Minister of Iran Hussein Amir-Abdollahian on 21 September. They followed-up on their first phone conversation on 31 August.
