Federica Mogherini, High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President of the European Commission, had a phone conversation with President of Ukraine, Petro Poroshenko, this morning. They discussed of the upcoming extraordinary Foreign Affairs Council, which the High Representative convened for Thursday, 29 January.

The Middle East Quartet Envoys (US, Russia, UN and EU) met on 26th January in Brussels. EU High Representative Federica Mogherini attended the start of the meeting.

I was sad to learn of the crash of a Greek fighter jet at the Los Llanos base in Spain participating in a NATO exercise programme, which has caused many casualties.

I express my deep condolences to the families and friends of those who lost their lives and wish a speedy recovery to those injured.

I also express my condolences to NATO and to the nations of those who died.

Following yesterday's attack on Mariupol and the escalation of violence in the Donbas Federica Mogherini, High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President of the European Commission, decided to convene extraordinary Foreign Affairs Council this coming Thursday, 29 January, in Brussels.

The involvement of all political actors resulted in agreement being reached on the newly adopted electoral law. The commitment shown by all parties to work in the interests of the country and to avoid a serious political crisis in the Democratic Republic of Congo is to be applauded.

The way is now clear for elections to be held within the time frames set out in the Constitution. We are also expecting the Independent National Electoral Commission to publish a full electoral timetable.

Residential areas of the city of Mariupol have been fired upon today from separatist held territory, which has cost the lives of at least fifteen civilians, wounding many others and terrorising the innocent population. This comes after a series of indiscriminate attacks in the Donbas in the past few days, accompanied by the announcements of further offensives by Russia-backed separatists, who bluntly refuse to observe the cease fire.

They discussed the deteriorating situation on the ground in Eastern Ukraine and the possible means to address the situation. They agreed to stay in close contact in the coming hours.
