The 17th European Union-Canada Summit took place on 17-18 July in Montreal. European Council President Donald Tusk and European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker represented the European Union. Canada was represented by its Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau. European Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmström also participated for the EU.

Dear colleagues, we follow with great attention the unfolding situation of migrants across the Central America region. Thousands aim at crossing the US-Mexico border in hope of reaching safety and build a livelihood for themselves and their families and their children. The reasons are multi-fold and many were noted in the earlier debate of the previous European Parliament on 14 November 2018.

Recognising the importance of the United Nations at the core of effective multilateralism, the EU and its member states will focus on three mutually reinforcing priorities at the 74th session of the General Assembly of the UN: 1. Conflict prevention, peace and security, 2. A common positive agenda, 3. Engagement on global challenges like climate change.
