The EU, its Member States and Australia share strong bonds in all domains. Bilateral relations are
deeply-rooted and expanding.

Today in Brussels, I met with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia, Mr Demeke Mekonnen. Ethiopia is undergoing challenging times. I expressed my great concern regarding increasing ethnic-targeted violence, numerous casualties and violations of human rights and of international humanitarian law. I also conveyed my analysis that this conflict is already seriously destabilising the region. 

24/11/2020 – HR/VP blog – With a ‘democratic recession’ underway and new threats to democracy emerging, we need to step up the defence of democracy, both at home and abroad. In particular, we should deepen our cooperation with fellow democracies to counter the rise of authoritarianism.

Madame President, Honourable Members, thank you very much for having this opportunity to address you today on a very important issue, the geopolitical implications of the recent agreements between Israel and the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and, recently, Sudan. And maybe many more in the future.

Let there be no doubt: respecting the status of Varosha, as set out in relevant United Nations Security Council Resolutions, is of paramount importance.

في 22 تشرين الثاني / نوفمبر ، قامت عملية ايريني التابعة للقوات البحرية للاتحاد الاوروبي في المتوسّط بتفتيش سفينة تجارية ترفع العلم التركي في البحر الأبيض المتوسط.  ونظرا الى نمط ملاحة هذه السفينة ، كان لدى عملية إيريني أسباب معقولة تجعلها تشتبه في امكانية  تحرّكها بشكل ينتهك حظر الأسلحة الذي تفرضه الأمم المتحدة.


On 22 November, the Operation EUNAVFOR MED IRINI inspected a Turkish-flagged merchant vessel in the Mediterranean. Given the pattern of navigation of this vessel, Operation IRINI had reasonable grounds to suspect that it could be acting in violation of the UN arms embargo.


Security now features as a political priority in many bilateral dialogues and the EU funds initiatives that help strengthening countries’ and societies’ resilience in the Neighbourhood regions. In a fast evolving environment, tackling security related issues efficiently requires joint efforts and a creative mix of tools and actions. The EU is working closely with its Eastern and Southern neighbours on the following security-related areas, while maintaining human rights and good governance at the center of this cooperation.
